trans-fat free. The new labels are required now to list trans-fats like we have since 1996. We’ve seen the new labels and unlike European regulations a product can claim to be trans-fat free if it has a right to claim fat free. What does this mean? Well, it means that you can now buy a product with a new label that claims to be Trans-fat free or to have 0grams of trans fats, when in reality the ingredients have not changed at all. We won’t give you a list of the ones we’ve found, but the list is long and includes coffee creamers. You see it may be a regulation to list trans- fats, but if there is less than 1 gram per serving size, the fat can be listed at zero. With creamers the fat content is usually about .995-.998 per tablespoon serving. The label shows 0 fat and can also of course claim 0 trans-fats since there can be no percentage of zero. The dairy industry takes advantage of this with non-fat milk. Is there such a thing as homogenized milk with no fat? Of course not, why would they homogenize it? How can it have cholesterol and be 0 fat?
In actuality, non-fat milk has almost 1gram of butterfat. The best rule is to ignore the fat claim and look at the ingredients. When the first, second or third ingredient is partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, the product contains a lot of harmful trans-fats. We’ve noticed dozens of products that have new labels with new claims of being trans-fat free when they made no changes in the formula and still use just as much hydrogenated oil as they did five or ten years ago. They were forced to re-label, but not reformulate with healthier ingredients, thanks to a loophole in the regulations. Just more proof that Sammi’s Best products make changes to improve our product and make it healthier based on sound science and research, not because it is trendy or a regulation. You will find no Hydrogenated fats/oils in our products and never have.
