8 Lactobacillus, Friendly Bacteria is Unfriendly to Viruses
This quote is from The Natural Foods Merchandiser - August 2002. "Evidence of the health benefits of lactobacillus and other probiotics -- also known as "friendly bacteria" - is impressive. Many studies have investigated the role of various strains of bacteria in preventing and treating such illnesses as inflammatory bowel disease, urinary tract infections, diarrhea and even colon cancer. Last year the American Journal of Gastroenterology published an entire supplemental issue dedicated to the use of probiotics in disease treatment. A recent study on the prevention of gastrointestinal infections suggests that probiotics may also be effective against viral infections. In this study, a group of 81 children was randomized to receive either a strain of lactobacillus (Lactobacillus GG) or placebo after hospital admission. Because many infections are acquired in the hospital (termed nosocomial infections), the researchers decided to test the protective effects of probiotics in this setting.
Of the 81 children in the study, 15 (18.5 percent) experienced diarrhea during their hospitalization. Stool analysis revealed that rotavirus was the most common cause. Probiotic supplement use was associated with a significantly reduced risk of diarrhea; only three children (6.7 percent) in the group given probiotics had diarrhea, yet 12 children (33.3 percent) in the placebo group experienced diarrhea during their hospital stay. The prevalence of rotavirus infection was similar in both groups, but the number of children with symptoms was dramatically lower in the probiotic group.

8An Open Letter to Our Customers
We wanted to welcome our new customers to our growing family of BestLife users. We began as a family business after our daughter started getting severe ear infections from homogenized milk in the mid-1980s. In trying to identify and solve our daughter's casein allergies we eventually learned a number of things about bovine milk and milk alternatives that led us to begin marketing whey and later soy-based milk alternatives. We feel the communication and association with various researchers, scientists, doctors and other qualified professionals over the years has resulted in a progressively healthier product and the line of products we offer today.
We don't believe anyone would continue to drink homogenized milk products if they could take time to really investigate like we have -- and we were a family that used a tremendous amount of milk. For years, however, we used fresh milk (with live lactobacillus) from a neighbor's dairy. Our daughter developed her problems after we could no longer get the ten gallons of raw milk we had been using. That's why it was so difficult to blame the milk. My husband and I grew up with a milk cow. After prescribed antibiotics it was finally a naturopathic physician who told us to take our daughter off milk. While some of our friends and family refused to believe us, some did their own homework and have switched. We have customers who have purchased our products for over ten years now and have witnessed many improvements.

8Recipe Corner - Zucchini-Garlic Pasta
1 3/4 cup diced tomatoes, drained
1 cup (6 oz. jar) marinated artichoke hearts, sliced, undrained
1/4 cup sliced ripe olives, drained
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
2 tbsp chopped fresh basil
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp ground black pepper
Combine tomatoes, artichoke hearts and juice, olives, parsley, basil, garlic, salt and pepper in large bowl. Cover; chill for several hours to blend flavors. Toss with pasta or serve at room temperature on toasted Italian bread slices or pizza.
